"Adopted in 1908 as a carbine version of the Gewehr 1898, the mainline battle rifle of Germany, it was originally issued to cavalry and support troops. Throughout world War one its handiness and hardiness in the trenches became notable and by the end of the war made up two thirds of issued rifles to German troops on all fronts. A favorite choice of storm troopers, it's reliability and size was preferred for trench raids.

This rifle was manufactured in 1915 at the royal arsenal at Erfurt and has the first original stock pattern.

Overall condition is very good having obviously been refinished at some point. The bluing is near complete and little wear is exhibited on the metal parts. Almost zero rust or pitting. The stock is in excellent shape having only minor scratches and dings from use. Clearly maintained well throughout its 109 year life span.

In 1967 this rifle was rechambered in 7.62x51mm NATO, presumably by Israel. The bore is in very good shape making it an accurate and trustworthy shooter.

This is a rare and historically significant weapon that has been properly preserved over many many years. A superb addition to any collection, having the merit of being an affordable and dependable shooter due to its chambering conversion. All in all a perfect example of an antique rifle that maintains its effectiveness and usability.
